I Am a Story: Self-Portraits

  • 54 artists – 10 countries – 5 continents

Stand as close as you like to these people, even though they are not wearing masks. Look at them face-to-face, straight in the eyes. Find their story. Self-portraits are auto-biographies. What are they saying? What are they saying to you? How are they saying it? Why are they saying it?

The variety of mediums is wide, from painting and photography to ceramic and marble, molded paper and video. Some are small and intimate, while others are larger than life. The timespan of the exhibition is a human life: it starts with a self-portrait of Kathë Kollowtiz, the first work of art purchased for the collection in 1964, while the most recent is a collage by Della Wells, 2020.

Each is an individual: together they make up humanity.
